If your washing machine is starting to smell or your clothes aren’t coming out as fresh as they used to, it might be time for a proper clean. According to Daniela, our cleaning expert here at Cleaners2Match, a clean washing machine can make a huge difference not just in cleaning results, but even in preventing skin allergies caused by mould build-up in the rubber seal.
At Cleaners2Match, we help hundreds of clients across Bromley, Beckenham, Chislehurst, and Biggin Hill keep their homes spotless — and your washing machine deserves the same attention.

Step 1: Run a Hot Wash Cycle with a Natural Cleaner - Clean Your Washing Machine
To clean the inside of your washing machine:
Use the hottest cycle and the largest load setting
Add one of the following directly into the drum:
3–4 cups of white vinegar, or
A machine-cleaning tablet, or
½ cup of bicarbonate of soda, followed by 2 cups of vinegar
This helps to break down limescale, kill bacteria, and remove lingering odours.
Step 2: Scrub the Drawer, Drum and Door Seal
Once the cycle is complete, clean the areas that are often neglected:
Detergent drawer: Remove it, soak in warm soapy water, scrub thoroughly, and dry.
Door seal (rubber gasket): This is where things usually get bad — mould builds up and it can be time-consuming to clean. We recommend using a steam machine to save time and get better results. Wipe thoroughly with a vinegar solution.
Tip: If mould stains won’t go away even after scrubbing, it might be time to call an engineer to replace the seal.
Drum edges and folds: Use a damp cloth or soft brush to remove fluff and grime, then follow up with a dry cloth.
Personal story from Lucas (Cleaners2Match Director and qualified plumber):I once tried removing the seal from my Bosch washing machine. I ended up needing to remove a cement weight inside — it was a nightmare and ended in me buying a new machine. Lesson learned: if it’s too bad, get a professional.
Step 3: Clean the Filter and Drain
If your machine has a drain pump filter (usually at the lower front):
Open the cover carefully (wear gloves — it’s foul water)
Drain the water into a shallow tray or use a wet vac if you have one - it keeps the process clean and hassle-free.
Remove and rinse the filter to clear out lint, hair, coins, or anything odd
Quick tip:I once left screws in my work trousers, and they clogged the pump — cost me £180. Always check your pockets before washing!
This step is especially important for homes with pets or larger families in South East London.
Step 4: Wipe Down the Exterior
Use a microfibre cloth and gentle spray cleaner to wipe:
Control panel and buttons
Inside and outside of the door
Top and sides of the machine
Keeping the exterior clean adds to the overall look of your laundry space and prevents dirt from spreading.
Step 5: Let It Breathe
Here’s a tip that no one talks about — always leave the washing machine door slightly open after every use. This allows airflow to dry out the inside and prevents mould growth, especially in the rubber seal.
It’s a simple habit that makes a big difference, especially during damp and humid seasons in Bromley.
